Description
Since 1983, Acutran Transformers has designed and manufactured neutral grounding transformer solutions, available either as individual transformer components or as a complete neutral grounding system.
A neutral grounding transformer (NGT) or earthing transformer—often configured as a single phase grounding transformer—is paired with a neutral grounding resistor to provide high resistance grounding, by connecting between the wye connection of a power generator and the ground. The single phase grounding transformer is a core variant of the neutral grounding transformer, tailored for scenarios requiring targeted grounding protection for generator systems.
For continuous time ratings, the neutral grounding transformer must be engineered to withstand rated current indefinitely. The kVA rating of a neutral grounding transformer equals the rated line-to-neutral voltage multiplied by the desired neutral current. For short-time ratings, the kVA rating of the neutral grounding transformer is smaller, as the unit—including the single phase grounding transformer model—is designed to carry rated current only for a limited duration.
A standard application is normally designed to limit line-to-ground fault current to below 15 amps for generators rated up to 14,400 volts. Acutran’s neutral grounding transformer delivers high resistance neutral during fault conditions, allowing the system to operate as an ungrounded system under normal circumstances. The single phase grounding transformer version performs equally well in this application, ensuring consistent fault current control and system stability.
Acutran can design a custom neutral grounding system for your particular needs if a standard unit is not sufficient. Typically all NGT systems share a common enclosure with separation between he NGT and resistor.
