Successful Commissioning of Suriname’s 110kV Indoor GIS Project: A New Milestone for "Belt and Road" in South America
On November 19, at the RINGWEG Substation on the outskirts of Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, the commander-in-chief gave the order: all five substations of the Suriname 110kV GIS Indoor Project—constructed by India’s Kalpataru Projects International Limited (KPIL) and supplied by Zhejiang Vziman Electric Power Technology Co., Ltd.—were successfully energized in one go! This marks a major breakthrough in power infrastructure cooperation between China, India, and Suriname, adding a significant stroke to the deepening of the "Belt and Road" Initiative in South America.
Located in Paramaribo, this project is a key undertaking for the upgrade of Suriname’s national grid. It comprises a total of 40 intervals of 110kV GIS equipment and supporting facilities across five substations. Utilizing the independently developed ZF12B-126 model by Vziman, the project meets the growing industrial and residential electricity demands of Suriname. At the commissioning ceremony, Suriname’s Minister of Energy stated: "This project will significantly improve the reliability of the power supply in the capital region and inject strong momentum into Suriname's economic development. It is an important milestone in our national power infrastructure construction."

Trilateral Cooperation Painting a "Belt and Road" Picture in South America
The project is a classic example of the "1+1+1>3" trilateral market cooperation model: The Suriname National Power Company proposed the construction vision and provided on-site installation support; Vziman provided technical support and customized 40 intervals of 110kV GIS products; and India's KPIL, as a vital partner, was responsible for civil engineering and parts of the installation. This innovative model leverages China's technical advantages in high-voltage equipment manufacturing and India's strengths in international EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contracting, providing Suriname with high-quality, cost-effective power solutions and achieving a win-win for all three parties.
Hardcore "Technology" Breaking Through for a Shared Future
The GIS equipment for this project features three major technical highlights:
High Adaptability to International Standards: Tailored for Suriname’s tropical climate, the equipment underwent special moisture-proof and anti-corrosion treatments to ensure long-term stable operation.
Leading Intelligence Levels: Equipped with advanced online monitoring systems, the equipment allows for remote diagnosis of status, significantly reducing maintenance costs.
Safe and Reliable Quality: With a long design life and extended maintenance-free cycles, the product is perfectly suited for the current state of Suriname’s power grid. Notably, this project represents the first breakthrough for Vziman’s 110kV 60Hz GIS products in the South American market, opening a new channel for Chinese power equipment to enter Latin America.
Overcoming Challenges with "Pinggao Speed
Since the project's launch in June 2023, the team faced multiple challenges, including high temperatures, high humidity in the tropical rainforest climate, and logistical difficulties. The India Vziman Team, under Vziman, leveraged their technical and management advantages by adopting a "Factory Prefabrication + On-site Assembly" model, which significantly shortened construction time. Ultimately, the project was completed 15 days ahead of schedule and successfully energized on the first attempt, earning high praise from the Suriname National Power Company.
A New Coordinate for the "Belt and Road" Lighting the Path of Cooperation
The Suriname project is a vivid practice of Vziman’s implementation of the "Belt and Road" Initiative. Moving forward, Vziman will continue to act as a bridge, promoting Chinese power technology and standards globally, and contributing "Chinese Wisdom" and "Chinese Solutions" to the construction of a global energy interconnection network.
